This is actually a link to an issue that someone else created a couple of years ago - I’ve just stuck my patch on the existing issue. I hadn’t seen this issue before today. I had, however, decided I wanted this kind of functionality fairly recently: I use the truncated display style as I find that works best for me in the terminal, but this does mean I forget and miss annotations I’ve added. I had thought about adding a new column that acted purely as an indicator as to whether a task contained annotations, but after looking at the source I decided this way looked easy enough to try first; Adding a new column might also be easy for all I know, but this truncated+count style is more space efficient.
